| "The scene set in the first series had the perfect opportunity to be built upon in true As Time Goes By fashion and thankfully, in series 2, it was" |

Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer return to the fray in the second series of this fine British romantic comedy. Series 2 carries on the story established in Series 1, digging deeper into the characters and their relationships. A revelation is made by Alistair (spoiler ahead!) regarding his unusual 'devotion' to the publication of Lionel's autobiographical book 'My Life in Kenya'. It turns out that Alistair's father owed Lionel's father a tremendous favour. You can surmise what form that favour has taken.
Speaking of Lionel's book, in late Series 2 the big day finally arrives, but Lionel's anxiety just might get the better of him. Despite this, Jean purchases many copies, and encourages those around her to follow suit.
New characters are introduced as well - Lionel's father, Jean's deceased husband's (David) talkative, over-concerned sister and several others...
In summary, Series 2 raises the As Time Goes By bar, bringing with it more interesting episode plots. The same gentle humour evident in Series 1 is carried through also, creating a smooth comedy analogisable to a calm, bubbling English brook. I can confidently recommend this to fans of light, British comedy. I think I might just sing As Time Goes By right now... "You must remember this..." |
